Housekeeping being of one my personal favorite departments of the hotel industry, I would love to explain what housekeeping is. The word Housekeeping is a combination of two words i.e house and keeping which means keeper of the house. This department is responsible for the care and maintenance of the hotel and its overall appearance. The main aim of this department is to provide the guests with a clean, attractive, comfortable, and welcoming surrounding that offers value of money.
The housekeeping department takes pride in keeping the hotel clean and comfortable, so as to create a ‘home away from home’. This department is an operational department of the hotel which is responsible for cleanliness, maintenance, aesthetic upkeep of rooms, public areas, back areas and the surrounding. The first thing that strikes to the minds of hundreds of people is cleanliness and tidiness when they hear the work housekeeping. The moment you enter the hotel, you start witnessing the magic that the housekeeping department plays. The glittering chandeliers, the fragrance of the flowers in the lobby, the crystal- clear glass doors, the immaculately polished marble floor is all done by this department.
No doubt that it is called as the ‘backbone of the hotel’, but nowadays it is called the ‘heart of the hotel’ because, it freshens up and invigorates the entire hotel day in day out, helps eliminate unwanted waste, and is responsible for a long and healthy life of the hotel. It is a 24*7*365 operation.
Following are some of the major task performed by the housekeeping department.
First and the foremost important task the housekeeping department performs is making the guest rooms ready every day.
Creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Staff’s uniform laundering.
Guest’s laundering service.
Providing fresh linen to the entire hotel.
Pest control, fumigation.
Deals with lost and found, …….
and a humongous list follows.
And to do all the mentioned things it’s takes tremendous human efforts; it is quite a physically challenging job.
